Getting Started – EWC Registration

Before working in schools in Wales, all NQTs must register with the Education Workforce Council (EWC).

You will need to:

1. Register as a school teacher with the EWC
2. Ensure your qualifications are verified
3. Maintain your registration annually

This is essential for both employment and completing your induction period. Our team is happy to guide you through this process if needed.

Completing Your NQT Induction

Your induction is a key stage in becoming a fully qualified teacher in Wales.

1. Induction can be completed through short-term supply teaching work
2. A minimum of 380 sessions is required
3. A full day counts as 2 sessions (morning and afternoon)
4. There is a 5-year time limit to complete induction for all NQTs who qualified from November 2022 onwards

Important guidance:

1. Only work completed as a qualified teacher counts towards induction
2. Roles such as Learning Support Assistant or Cover Supervisor do not count
3. All teaching work of one session or more must be recorded with the EWC
4. There is no flexibility to exclude any teaching work from induction
5. Supply work completed before September 2012 does not count

Changes from September 2024

There have been important updates to the induction process:

1. All NQTs are now supported by an induction mentor
2. For long-term placements (11+ days), mentorship is provided by the school’s internal mentor
3. For short-term/day-to-day supply, a mentor is provided by the local consortium
4. The external verifier role has been removed
5. Greater responsibility is now placed on the induction mentor
6. Induction validators may visit and review selected NQTs where there are concerns
7. The previous PLE has been replaced with two professional enquiry projects, creating a more holistic assessment approach
8. A professional learning programme is still available and strongly encouraged

Submission of Paperwork (Supply NQTs)

If you are completing induction via supply work:

1. You must submit the Induction as a Short Term Supply Teacher Notification Form (Form 3) to the EWC as soon as you begin work
2. Once processed, you will receive details to set up your MyEWC account and record sessions

Key requirements:

1. All sessions must be verified by the schools you work in
2. Keep a Record of Attendance (Form 4), which is uploaded to your induction profile
3. Always ensure your work is signed off daily by a Headteacher or senior staff member

Allocation of an Induction Mentor

All NQTs in Wales are assigned an Induction Mentor:

1. Day-to-day supply teachers → Mentor allocated via the Local Authority/Consortium
2. Long-term placements → Mentor allocated by the school

Your mentor details will be visible via your MyEWC account once assigned.

Professional Learning & Development

We strongly encourage all NQTs to engage in ongoing professional learning:

EAS Professional Learning

1. NQTs working across the EAS region can access professional learning programmes
2. Schools may be able to claim funding to release NQTs to attend sessions

Professional Learning Passport (PLP)

1. All NQTs must use the PLP to access their induction profile
2. Used to record and reflect on professional development
3. Allows you to upload evidence such as documents, videos, and reflections

Welsh Government Hwb

1. Access curriculum updates and classroom resources
2. Stay informed on developments in the Welsh education system
3. Includes access to academic journals and learning materials
